1. Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee

devdas

The name ‘Devdas’ and ‘Paro’ has become synonyms with intense love. Book has been adapted to many movies.

However, it is not a convenient romantic tale with a happy ending and flowers.

Devdas is a tragic story of the love of Devdas and Paro.

How the division of class torn apart the childhood sweethearts?

This is the story of the self-destruction of the Devdas. How the flawed personality and character could turn into worse when his love is not accepted. The philosophy behind the book is that unrequited love is still love and is powerful enough to destroy the life of a person.

Sarat Chandra Chatterjee has set up the Devdas in the 19th century, but it does not matter as the story is timeless.

The books talk about the division of society on the basis of class, caste, and gender. Devdas is a classic romantic novel by an Indian author.

The book has shaped modern Indian lovers and love stories. Impact of the work could be seen in Indian society. Devdas is a permanent part of all the lists of Romantic Novels by Indian Authors

2. 2 States by Chetan Bhagat

2 states

This is a story of two people making it possible to create happily ending their love story.

Chetan Bhagat is the most popular author of India. It is not wrong to say that the success of his books has a great hand in motivating the Indian English writers.

The story of 2 States is inspired by his own life. Movie adaptation of the book was hit.

The books tell the story of Krish and Ananya. Two people from different states, with different cultures fall in love in college. But they do not want to end their love life with the college and decides to marry.

I don’t need to tell you what could go wrong.

The story has up and downs, funny and sad moments, a complementary storyline that affects the main story and an optimistic ending.

2 States by Chetan Bhagat is the complete package if you are looking for a young adult romantic novel by an Indian author.

3. I Too Had A Love Story by Ravinder Singh

ravinder singh

I Too Had a Love Story is the debut book of Ravinder Singh. The book is inspired by his own story.

This is a sad book from the first line. The story is about losing your loved one and finding a silver line in the middle of blue.

Ravin and Khushi meet via a dating site and instantly clicked with each other. But destiny has something else planned for them.

Ravin lost the Khushi and has to go through the pain of losing someone forever. The entire book revolves around two characters and there is nothing much other than Ravin and Khushi.

4. If It’s Not Forever, It’s Not Love by Durjoy Dutta

durjoy dutta book

If I am writing a post on the top 10 romantic novels by Indian authors, Durjoy Dutta had to be on the list.

The book is co-authored by Nikita Singh. This is an emotional story of lives lost in the bomb blast in Chandni Chowk. Deb survived the blast and come close to death. This closeness to death makes him realize the importance of life and his relations with his girlfriend and friend.

Later, he finds out a diary at the place of one of the victims of the blast. Deb decides to find out more about the person and finish his story. He begins his journey with his friend and girlfriend.

This is a sad, and one of the best work by Durjoy Dutta. The book will hook you up from the beginning and the climax may make you cry.

Both Nikita Singh and Durjoy Dutta has given their best. The backdrop is intense and the motivations of the characters are real.

In the end, you will find the courage to look at life from a different perspective.

5. Just Friends by Sumrit Shahi

Just Freinds

The book asks a universal question: Can a Boy and a Girl stay friends?

Sumrit Shahi has made a name in writing teenage shows for TV. Her books are national bestsellers, and Just Friends was the first one.

The book is exactly as the title said. Just Freinds.

Two pair of best friends of opposite genders trying to not falling in love and falling in love and trying to maintain their friendship, and not trying to maintain their friendship and telling their stories.

Does this sentence feel chaotic?

Then you should read this romantic novel from an Indian author.

Other Romantic Novels by Sumrit Shahi: A Lot Like Love, A Lil Like Chocolates, Never Kiss your Best Freind

6. Truly, Madly, Deeply by Faraaz Kazi

Truly Madly Deeply

The only book from an Indian author to get the Goodreads nomination is Truly, Madly, Deeply. This is a story of the first love and first heartbreak.

A book that brings back the nostalgia of school love. Rahul and Seema fall in love and begin the joyous journey of teenage love. School is not the place of love only, that age is when Id is super strong and people take the wrong decision right and left.

The love story ahs to taste the peer-pressure, misunderstandings, and various school life drama.

Though it is the first book of Faraaz Kazi, and he also falls into the trap of philosophical monologues, the language is still soothing. Book has a slight maturity to it that separates the book from various other school romances.

That’s why this book is in my top 10 Romantic Novels by Indian Authors list.

7. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

The SUitable Boy

When you look into the core, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth is a love story. One of the largest book of the English language, and the largest English book by any Indian author.

If you enjoyed 2 States, and want to read something more complex and much much better, read A Suitable Boy. In 2 States, the families of the boy and girl are from separate states.

Vikram Seth writes with more words capturing multiple dimensions of an Indian Marriage. The story unfolds through four middle-class families – the Mehras, Kapoor’s, Khans, and Chatterjis. It is a story of finding a suitable boy for the Lata Mehra.

The story is set up in 1950s India, a big nation in turmoil. A Suitable Boy pictures the interaction of the four families and many other characters in detail.

The book is an amazing read if you want to read a classic romance.

8. The Reason is You by Nikita Singh

the reason is you

In this book, Nikita Singh talks about clinical mental disorder and how it affects life and every around it.

Depression does not exist in India. This is a general notion.

In The Reason is You, the protagonist is depressed and she finds out the help the hard way. Aakriti and Shidhant lose each other because of this mental illness.

It is a love story, sad and miserable in its own world.

sudeep nagarkar

Akash is a conservative boy who prefers brains over beauty. Until he meets the Alesha. Aleesha is rainbow to the Akash’s b&w sketch. She is a graph while he is Data.

Sudeep Nagarkar has written a simple feel-good romance story.

The love story of Akash and Aleesha is not unique, but it is real. It is a story of people around us, and ours. The love begins from the Blackberry pins and evolves to something. Then, surely, as the teenager usually do, Akash and Aleesha mess up everything.

Though there are many other characters that seed the misunderstanding between them. In the end, everything is alright.

It is a simple romantic novel by an Indian author in the English language.

10. It Happens for a Reason by Preeti Shenoy

happens for a reason

List of Top 10 Romantic Novels by Indian Authors cannot be complete without Preeti Shenoy.

It Happens for a Reason is very different from all the other novels mentioned in the list. While all of them talk about first love or beginner’s love, It Happens for a Reason looks for love at a more mature age.

Vipasha has a son, and she does two jobs to support her family. She has a crush on a Vet.

But one day, she finds herself face to face with Ankush – love from her past.

The emotion in the book runs high and this is not a light read. Lives of Vipasha and Aaryan get intertwined with the Ankush.

You have to guess with whom Vipasha ends up.
