We Were Liars Quote – Praising the Purple Prose
Purple Prose and the We Were Liars Quotes 😉
The GoodReads choice winner of 2014, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is genuinely tragedy story. There is the thing that if anyone asks about the end, just lie.
We Were Liars packs the punch in the whole book, then knocks out the reader, as well as protagonist, in a single swing.
There is also lots of discussion about the writing style of the book. It is odd to say very less. I mean, look at this:
I plunge down,
down to rocky rocky bottom, and
I can see the base of Beechwood Island and
my arms and legs feel numb but my fingers are cold. Slices
of seaweed go past as I fall.
And then I am up again, and breathing.
my head is okay,
no one needs to cry for me or worry about me.
I am fine,
I am alive.
I swim to shore.
This type of writing really put off many readers. And then it was full of Purple Prose.
Just look at it:
Then he pulled out a handgun and shot me in the chest. I was standing on the lawn and I fell. The bullet hole opened wide and my heart rolled out of my rib cage and down into a flower bed. Blood gushed rhythmically from my open wound,
then from my eyes,
But still, the book was a success, because of the purple prose. Because of the prose, the book delivers too many quotes. Quotes help a lot in the marketing of the book.
As there is an event in the Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. The protagonist reads whole Outsiders, just to understand what “Stay Gold Ponyboy” mean.
I have read a few books after reading the quotes.
I am not saying that the success of the We Were Liars happened because of We Were Liars quotes, but I think because the quotes were shareable, they get some benefit.
