Gail Honeyman Quotes

I find lateness exceptionally rude; it’s so disrespectful, implying unambiguously that you consider yourself and your own time to be so much more valuable than the other person’s.

It takes a long time to learn to live with loss, assuming you ever manage it.

If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE

If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days. FINE is what you say.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Book Review

The character of the Eleanor Oliphant falls into the nicegirls category. Upfront, I mean.

If you don’t know her, and that’s how things actually are, people don’t know each other. Everyone is a stranger.

Then they met by some accident or incident and relationship or friendship forms.

But to have that, a person has to be decent. Eleanor Oliphant is not.

That’s why she is struggling.

Eleanor is strict, uptight, and a judgemental girl who has an opinion about everyone. But she does not have any friends to share her opinions.

It might be wrong to say, but I find her character rude and mean. Though I understand where such indecency comes, if a person doesn’t know that, she is not likable.

It is a paradoxical situation.

You cannot like a person because she is hateful and bad. But once you know her, you will find that she is actually a nice person. But she is not going to tell you anything about herself because she has built such walls around her from years of loneliness.

So, the situation reversed, and the person left her, accusing her of being a closed person. That only increase the thickness.

This is the reason people with friends easily made friends, and lonely people tend to be alone. The more alone you are the more you want to be alone, it kinds of free you from multiple social responsibilities and releases you from various worries.

Eleanor Oliphant is alone for more than 5+ years, and that has made her truly hateful.

This is the same thing Zoe Heller talks about in Notes in the Scandal. Both of the books say the same things, though the tragedy of Zoe Heller’s protagonist is not mentioned in the book.

I think if you enjoyed the Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, you will enjoy the Notes in the Scandal too.
