The Outsiders Book by S E Hinton | Book Review

I have read the outsiders book by S E Hinton to understand this quote.. and now I know it.

Stay Gold Ponyboy -- The Outsiders by S E Hinton

You will never understand what it means to stay gold without reading The Outsiders Book by S E Hinton.

Finished it in 3 hours. I start reading it because I want to understand the reference “Stay Gold” used in Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

That’s why I tried it. It goes well.

Well, so more than Well.

I did some google and found out that that the author was 17 when she wrote it.

Out Story of The Outsiders Book

A small town. Two groups. Greasers and Socials (Socs).

PonyBoy Curtis is a greaser. And both Greaser and Socs love to fight. They rumble but they never harm each other that seriously. Until a day.

I am a greaser. I am a JD and a hood. I blacken the name of our fair city. I beat up people. I rob gas stations. I am a menace to society. Man, do I have fun!.

That day Johnny, BFF of Ponyboy and Ponyboy gets in a fight with Socs in a park. They start beating them because Ponyboy and Greasers watched the movie with some Socs girl.

Hence, Socs did not like it.
Johny gets paranoid (I do not want to spoil) and kills a Soc.

Why do you like fights Darry : Ponyboy
He just likes to show off his muscles : Sodapop

Then they ran away and with the help of Dallas (the most important of Greasers), hides in another town.

And there, they save school kids from the fire. In this event, Johnny burns himself quite seriously.

They come back and then the friend of person (killed by Johnny) called for the truce.

But Socs do not understand and demand a rumble. And they do. They fight and in the end, Johnny died of burns. And Dallas gets himself shoot by policemen because of guilt and grief.

Reminding Characters

You will not forget Dallas and Ponyboy and Sodapop and Johnny.

Because they are written very simply. The story is actually a character driven. We get involve with them. A one-way narrator makes you belong to the area.

Ponyboy, listen, don’t get tough. You’re not like the rest of us and don’t try to be…

The story show two different sides of the same town. Meanwhile, a metaphor for two different worlds. Fighting with each other to gain power but still, it never loses the beauty of the fiction.

Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset.

Finally, in the end, story finished with the hope of improving.

Most of all people change and character developed.

A review of The Outsiders deserves a comment 🙂 It is my all time favourite book and I had read it as a mother of a teen, and between us, we used to fight to read it, just waiting for the other to put it down. What a beautiful YA fiction. Didn’t know that S.E.Hinton had decided to come out with her real name on the book! You might want to read my review too 🙂
